Description
Changing America commemorates 2 historic events, separated by 100 years, on their 150th and 50th anniversaries even as Miami University celebrates the 50th anniversary of Freedom Summer. Both tell the story of people longing for liberty and justice. This presentation will explore how various forms of American music reflected the shifting political and social consciousness of the country during the century that followed the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. It will survey key musical performances in the genres of folk music, gospel, jazz, and soul music to frame how music mediated to global audiences a narrative of transcendence, resistance and social awareness that culminated with The March on Washington. The exhibition is made possible by the National Endowment for the Humanities and is presented by the Smithsonian?s National Museum of African American History and Culture and the National Museum of American History in collaboration with the American Library Association Public Programs Office.
